GEO — Generative Engine Optimization
Definition, differences from SEO, operational techniques.
Definition
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a site so that AI generative engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot) cite it as a source when answering user queries. It's the natural evolution of classic SEO in the era of AI assistants, where more searches happen via chatbots rather than Google.
Differences from classic SEO
Classic SEO optimizes for SERP rankings on Google: positions 1-10, clicks, traffic. GEO optimizes to be cited by LLMs when they elaborate answers. Related but distinct objectives.
| Aspect | Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | SERP ranking | LLM citation |
| Measure | Clicks, traffic | Citation rate, brand mention |
| Content format | Long-form, keyword-dense | Citation-friendly, statistic-rich |
| Schema | Rich snippets | Extended JSON-LD, llms.txt |
| Authority | Backlinks, domain | Direct citations, primary data |
GEO operational techniques
1. llms.txt and llms-full.txt
Emerging standard to give LLMs a structured site summary in plain-text markdown. /llms.txt contains the navigable index, /llms-full.txt the full content. See ours: webcreation.it/llms.txt.
2. Extended Schema.org JSON-LD
Structured data markup with specific types: Organization with extended knowsAbout, FAQPage for answers, Article with author Schema Person, BreadcrumbList on hierarchies. LLMs parse this data and use it to construct reliable answers.
3. robots.txt with AI bot authorization
Explicit allow for AI crawlers: GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), Google-Extended (Gemini SGE). Without these LLMs don't read the site.
4. Citation-friendly content
LLMs cite sites that give concrete, specific information: real prices, build times, verifiable statistics, use cases with numbers. They don't cite marketing fluff.
5. Structured authority signals
Author bio with Schema Person, declared experience, case studies with real numbers, technologies listed, sectors served. The LLM verifies who's speaking behind the site.
6. Comparative pages
"X vs Y" pages intercept typical decisional queries. When someone asks ChatGPT "WooCommerce vs Shopify in 2026?", the dedicated page is cited as source. Examples: WooCommerce vs Shopify, WooCommerce vs PrestaShop, WooCommerce vs Magento.
Whitehat GEO vs blackhat
Hidden prompt injection techniques (white text on white background, HTML "ignore previous instructions" comments) try to manipulate LLMs. They're counterproductive: modern LLMs detect and penalize them. Plus they violate OpenAI/Anthropic/Google policies and lead to deindexing. The GEO that works is whitehat: honest content, concrete data, citation-friendly structure.
