Server-side tagging
Tracking that actually works after iOS 14, ad blockers and cookie restrictions.
Definition
Server-side tagging is an analytics tracking technique where events (page view, add to cart, purchase, etc.) are sent to a controlled intermediate server of the site, rather than directly from the user's browser to analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Meta, TikTok). The server then forwards events to platforms via server-to-server API.
Why it's needed
Since 2021 (iOS 14, ATT — App Tracking Transparency) and the progressive introduction of cookie blocking on browsers (Safari ITP, Firefox ETP, Chrome cookieless 2024+), traditional client-side tracking (JavaScript Pixel) loses 30-60% of events on Apple devices and on users with ad blockers. Result: underestimated ROAS, imprecise ADS campaign optimization, marketing decisions based on incomplete data.
Server-side tagging solves this by moving tracking where ad blockers can't reach: your server. From there the data is complete and reliable.
Client-side vs server-side
| Aspect | Client-side | Server-side |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | User browser | Controlled server |
| Data reliability | 60-70% post iOS 14 | 95%+ real data |
| Ad blocker bypass | No | Yes |
| Page performance | Heavy (multiple JS) | Light (1 call) |
| Privacy / GDPR | 3rd party cookies | Greater data control |
| Setup cost | Low | Medium (server + config) |
Implementation
The de-facto standard is Google Tag Manager (GTM) server-side container:
- Server GTM setup — on Google Cloud (€80-150/month) or proprietary server.
- Tag configuration — Google Analytics 4 server, Meta Conversion API, TikTok Events API, Google Ads conversion.
- Event migration — events that previously went via JavaScript Pixel now pass through server GTM.
- First-party cookie domain — replaces 3rd-party cookies with a cookie on site domain.
- Test and validation — comparison server vs client to measure recovery (typically +25-40%).
When server-side tagging makes sense
- Ecommerce with ADS investment > €1,000/month: data recovery translates to better algorithm optimization, real ROAS.
- Industries with high Apple usage: fashion, lifestyle, tech (more impacted by iOS ATT).
- B2B lead generation: to correctly measure the funnel.
- Advanced GDPR compliance: more control over which data leaves the server.
Server-side tagging on WooCommerce
WooCommerce supports native server-side tagging thanks to full PHP backend control. It's one of its advantages over Shopify Basic/Shopify (where server-side tagging is limited and requires Shopify Plus at €2,000+/month). On WooCommerce server-side setup is included in our projects from the Professional package up.
