Tell us about your systems

Real case

How much enamel paint did we sell this month?
Now you ask Claude, with the real data.

To know how much it was selling and how much it was spending on advertising, VenditaVernici.it had to open WooCommerce, Google Ads and Analytics and export spreadsheets.

We wrote an MCP server that connects Claude to the three systems in read-only mode. The owner asks in plain Italian "what did I sell most in September and how much did it cost me" and gets the numbers as they stand at that moment.

  • 3 systemsWooCommerce, Google Ads and Analytics in a single question
  • Read-onlyno data the AI can change
  • From half an hour to one minutefor a sales and advertising report

Claude and ChatGPT work blind
if they cannot see your data.

An MCP server is the program that connects Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants to your company's systems, such as your ERP, databases, WooCommerce or CRM, through the Model Context Protocol. The protocol's official site compares it to a USB-C port for AI applications, a standard connector for plugging in different tools and data.

Many businesses already use Claude or ChatGPT every day, but only halfway. They export a file from the ERP, upload it to the chat, copy the answer and type it back into the software by hand. Every step is lost time and a chance for errors, and the data is always a few hours old.

MCP is the open standard, created by Anthropic and also adopted by OpenAI, that lets an AI assistant connect to external tools and data. The MCP server securely exposes the functions of your systems, such as looking up a customer in the CRM, reading WooCommerce orders, checking a stock level or creating a draft document in the ERP.

We write custom MCP servers for the systems you use, with authentication, per-function permissions and a log of every call. Your people ask Claude or ChatGPT and the answer comes from the real data, current at that moment, just as it does at VenditaVernici.it with WooCommerce, Analytics and Google Ads campaigns in a single question.

Model Context Protocol

MCP, what it is and how
the Model Context Protocol works

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. On 9 December 2025 Anthropic donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation, a fund of the Linux Foundation created together with Block and OpenAI; in the same announcement it counted more than 10,000 active public MCP servers.

  • The client

It is the application the person uses, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or development tools like Visual Studio Code and Cursor. The client reads the list of available functions and decides when to call them.

  • The server

It is the program we write. It exposes tools, meaning actions such as looking up an order or reading a stock level, along with resources to consult and ready-made prompts, each with a description the model reads so it uses it the right way.

  • Local or remote

A local server runs on the user's computer and suits a single person. A remote server runs on a company server, is reached over HTTPS with authentication and serves several users with a single update.

  • Claude MCP in practice

In Claude a remote MCP server is added as a connector, with its address and the company login; a local server is configured in the desktop app. The same server also works with ChatGPT and the other compatible clients, with nothing to rewrite.

  • A standard, not a product

A server written today for Claude stays valid if you switch assistants tomorrow. That is why it pays to invest in an MCP server rather than in integrations tied to a single vendor.

MCP for WordPress and WooCommerce

MCP for WordPress
and WooCommerce.

WordPress and WooCommerce are getting ready to talk to AI assistants. Knowing the official components helps you see what you can use right away and what is worth building custom.

MCP server connected to a WooCommerce store

Abilities API and MCP Adapter

Since WordPress 6.9 the Abilities API describes in a standard way what a site can do, and the MCP Adapter presented by the WordPress AI working group turns these functions into MCP tools. Plugins and themes can then expose their own actions to AI assistants.

WooCommerce MCP, still in preview

WooCommerce has native MCP support in developer preview. You turn it on with a setting, and it lets you search, create, edit and delete products, view orders, change their status and add notes. It connects with the application password of a WordPress user.

When you need a custom server

The standard functions do not know your ERP, your margins or your ad campaigns, and they open write operations you often do not need. A custom server exposes only what is necessary, with a dedicated user and minimal permissions, as WooCommerce's own documentation recommends. For the store's other AI functions see the AI for e-commerce page.

How we build it

A secure MCP server
exposes functions, not the database.

The most common mistake is giving the AI full access to your systems. We design the MCP server as a narrow interface, with a few well-defined functions.

Architecture of an MCP server with permissions and authentication

Purpose-built tools, not open queries

The server exposes precise functions, such as "find order by customer" or "stock level of an item", with validated parameters. The model does not write SQL against your database and cannot step outside the perimeter.

Authentication and per-user permissions

Each user signs in with their own credentials, with OAuth authentication for remote servers. Write functions are kept separate from read functions and are enabled only for those who need them.

Logging and limits

Every call is logged with the user, the function and the parameters. Limits on frequency and on the amount of data returned prevent bulk extraction, even accidental.

The project

How an MCP server is built,
what development includes

We develop it like any software that touches company data, with a specification, code, testing and documentation.

  • Choosing the useful functions

We start from the questions and operations people handle every day and turn them into a small set of tools. A few clear functions work better than a hundred generic ones.

  • Server development

An MCP server in TypeScript, Python or PHP depending on the systems to connect, written like all our custom software, running locally on the user's computer or remotely on a company server, with tool descriptions written so the model uses them correctly.

  • Connectors to your systems

WooCommerce and WordPress REST APIs, ERP databases, CRM and third-party service APIs. When a system has no API, we write the access layer ourselves.

  • Protection against abuse

Parameter validation, explicit confirmation for write actions, protection against instructions hidden in the data the model reads, and secrets kept out of the code.

  • Client setup

For Claude MCP we configure the connectors in the desktop or web app of the people who will use it, and we do the same with ChatGPT or the other compatible clients, with a short training session on the useful commands.

  • Documentation, and the code is yours

The code is delivered and documented, with the list of functions and permissions. You can extend it yourself or ask us for new functions with an hour package.

MCP or direct integration

MCP server or integration
with the model APIs?

They are two different paths. A project often uses both.

Choose an MCP server if

  • Your people already use Claude or ChatGPT and you want them to see company data.
  • You need open questions on the data, different every time.
  • You want to be able to switch AI clients without rebuilding the connectors.
  • The work stays led by a person who asks and checks.

Choose API integration if

  • The AI has to work on its own inside a process, with no person in the chat.
  • The function goes inside your software or your website, for your customers.
  • You need high volumes and predictable costs per request.
  • The task is always the same, such as classifying, extracting or writing a text.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions
about MCP servers

What is an MCP server?

It is a program that exposes the functions and data of a system according to the Model Context Protocol, the open standard that assistants like Claude and ChatGPT use to connect to external tools. The AI client sees the list of available functions and calls them when it needs them to answer.

How does MCP work?

MCP splits the work between client and server. The client is the application the person uses, such as Claude or ChatGPT; the server exposes the tools, resources and prompts of a system. When a question comes in, the client reads the list of available tools, the model decides which one to call and the server runs the operation on the real data and returns the result.

How do you build an MCP server?

You start from the questions and operations people handle every day and turn them into a few well-described functions. Then you write the server with one of the official SDKs, in TypeScript, Python or other languages, connect the APIs or the database of the system, add authentication, permissions and logging, and test it with the clients you will use. For a business the most delicate part is security, not the protocol.

What are the tools of an MCP server?

They are the functions the model can call, such as looking up an order, reading a stock level or creating a draft document. Each tool has a name, a description and a parameter schema that the server checks; the client can ask the person for confirmation before running it. Alongside tools, the protocol provides resources to consult and ready-made prompts.

What are some examples of MCP servers for businesses?

A server that lets Claude read WooCommerce orders, products and stock; one that queries the ERP for customers, price lists and deadlines; one on the CRM to get a customer's history before a phone call; one on document archives with semantic search. At VenditaVernici.it a single server connects WooCommerce, Google Ads and Analytics in read-only mode.

Is it safe?

It is if the server exposes a few defined functions, with per-user permissions, confirmation for write actions and a log of every call. We never give the model unrestricted access to the database.

How much does it cost to develop an MCP server?

It falls under AI programming in our price list, from €5,000 to €15,000 with a timeline of 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the systems to connect, the number of functions and the write actions. New functions on an existing server are added with hour packages.

Which AI clients support MCP?

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and development tools such as Visual Studio Code and Cursor support MCP. How you enable it changes between versions and plans, so we check what is available for your accounts.
